The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life. You will be hosted by Reindeer herders who will show and teach you about Reindeer herding and Sami culture. With thousands of reindeer in the mountains and a herd of around 200 at the camp during the winter months you are guaranteed to experience the joy of being close to these wonderful creatures, the feeling of coming into a warm lavvu (Sami tent) and the sounds of the traditional joik (Sami singing). This is a ritual which for us is an important way of life and it is our pleasure and aim to let you experience it.

Package 1. Long Reindeer Sledding, Reindeer Feeding and Sami Culture

Pickup in the city centre before you can enjoy a short, seaside drive (around 25 minutes from the city) to where the reindeer and sleds are waiting. Join Sami guides for an unforgettable experience of reindeer sledding (approx. 35 minutes) and Sami culture.

After the sledding you will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 200 reindeer. Then you will gather inside the lavuu (Sami tent) for a hot traditional Sami meal and listen to stories about Sami culture around the camp fire. The guide will also joik for the guests (traditional Sami song).

At the camp, you will also be able to participate in the daily feeding and tending of the animals. The herder and his family will tell you about their culture and history, and how their way of life fits in around the reindeer.

Package 2. Short Reindeer Sledding, Reindeer Feeding and Sami Culture

After a 25-minute drive from the city centre, you will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 200 wild reindeer who will swarm all around and some will even eat from your hands. Guides will also teach you how to use the lasso (but not on real reindeer).

You will then be given some guidance and history about reindeer sledding and go on a short sledding ride (5 – 10 mins) near the sea with the mountains in the background. All the reindeer at the camp live wild for most of the year and are only at the camp for a few months over winter to protect them from predators and harsh winter conditions.

You will then be invited inside a gamme (a traditional sami hut) where you will be served warm drinks and a traditional Sami meal will be cooked over the fire (vegetarian option available).

After lunch you will be invited into a lavuu (Sami tent) and gather round the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.

Package 4. Reindeer Camp Dinner with Chance of Northern Lights

This is an experience to feed the reindeer in the nightime, have a traditional sami dinner with the Sami Reindeer Herders while they tell you about their culture and their beliefs.

The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and they have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life.

After a 25-minute drive from the city centre, you will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 200 wild reindeer who will swarm all around and some will even eat from your hands.

You will then be invited for Hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate) around the fire inside a warm candle lit gamme (Traditional Sami Hut) where you will then be served a relaxed three course meal including bidos cooked over the open fire (a traditional Sami stew which is often served at Sami weddings and other special occasions). A vegetarian option is also possible.

After dinner you will be invited into a lavuu (Sami tent) and gather round the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.

If you are lucky and the sky is clear you will have a chance to see the northern lights above the reindeer camp.

  • 6pm Pick up from Tromsø City Centre at 6pm and 25 min drive to Reindeer Camp
  • 6.30pm: Arrive at Reindeer Camp and feeding of wild Reindeer and walk around the reindeer camp
  • 7.30pm Hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate) around the fire inside a warm candle lit gamme (Traditional Sami Hut)
  • A cold smoked salmon starter, followed by a bidos (a traditional Sami stew) and Sami bread (a vegetarian option is also possible)
  • Chocolate cake and blue berry dessert whilst listening to storytelling of Sami Culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder
  • A joik performance (traditional Sami folk song)
  • Guests will have the opportunity to be outside and try and catch the northern lights.
  • Bus ride back to the city center around 10.30pm
